Those difficult to wrap Christmas gifts

It’s a good bet that many children will be asking for a bicycle this Christmas, but how on earth do you gift wrap it?

Add personalised ribbon to your bulky gifts

Or golf clubs, widescreen TVs, toboggans, scooters or, if you are very generous, a car. All make great gifts, but, let’s face it – you can’t just get out the wrapping paper and gift tag to make them Christmassy.

Personalised ribbon is a great way to make sure your gift looks festive without either breaking the bank or spending hours sculpting gift wrap from rolls and rolls of paper.

Simply drape around your present and finish with a bow. 45mm ribbon works best for large items. We used around 4 metres for this child’s bike.

Christmas Gift Wrapping Ideas – plain & simple

In the run up to Christmas we bring you some great gift wrapping ideas using our printed and personalised ribbon.

Not into dancing santas and brightly coloured xmas wrapping paper?

How about this gift wrap idea using simple brown paper and printed ribbon for a minimalist, vintage effect.

The ribbon is cream 10mm satin printed in black with merry xmas in courier font – it’s the font that looks like an old fashioned typewriter. We used a space between each letter and 3 spaces between each word.

We then printed the name in the same font onto cream card and cut out to create a very simple tag which we glued to the wrapping.

Tying Bows with Personalised Ribbon

Now you have your personalised ribbon, you will want it to look it’s best tied around a gift, wedding favour box etc. If you tie it normally, chances are some of the printing will be hidden, so follow our guide to tying bows with personalised ribbon to get the perfect finish.

Cut your ribbon to size allowing enough to go round the box or gift, tie the bow and a bit more.

1. For a gift or box where you are wrapping the ribbon round one side only, wrap the ribbon around and tie in a single knot. You can now tie your bow following the instructions at 3. below.

2. If you want your ribbon to go round each side of your box like this wedding favour box use this technique to ensure the ribbon lies flat underneath (if you are left handed you may need to adjust):

personalised burgundy favourTake your ribbon and place across the top of the box leaving approx 30cm to the left. The printed side should be facing up.

Holding in place with your thumb on the centre top of the box, wrap the longer end ribbon around the bottom of the box. When you get back to the top, place this under your thumb too.

You now need to fold the ribbon back on itself and then at right angles so that you can wrap it around the box on the remaining 2 sides with the print facing up – again use your thumb to hold it all in place.

The ribbon should now be wrapped around the box on all four sides with a cross over point at the centre top and 2 ends of ribbon – one underneath and one on top.

Keeping your thumb firmly on the cross over point, tuck the end of the top ribbon under the cross over point from the top right segment so that it comes out in the bottom left segment, this time with the print facing down.

Now you can lift your thumb and pull the two ends of ribbon together tightly. This can take a bit of practice but once you have done it a couple of times it will get easier!personalised pillow favour

3. To tie your bow, form the first loop, keeping the printed side of the ribbon on the outside. As you form the second loop and pull it through, turn the ribbon around so the the printing is facing out for this loop too.

Keep the bow slightly loose while you adjustment the size of the loops, then pull tight. Trim the ends of the ribbon to neaten.

Choosing your ribbon print colours

We are often asked about the best print colours to choose to go with a particular colour ribbon. Of course, this is often down to personal taste, but there are some combinations which work well together that you may not have thought about. And there are also some which simply won’t show up clearly.

Favourite Combinations

Metallic Gold and Silver will go with just about everything. burgundy ribbon with metallic gold print

White print works well on strong coloured ribbons like purple, red and fuchsia.

On a pastel coloured ribbon, try print in a darker version of the same colour. For example, blue print on baby blue ribbon, purple on lilac ribbon. Another that works really well is burgundy print on baby pink.

 Subtle effects

Use these combinations if you are looking for a subtle effect on your ribbon. As there is not a great contrast, they will not show up well on banners and sashes:

White on baby blue or pink

Matt gold and silver will give a much softer look than the metallics – like this matt gold on brown ribbon.

Ones to avoid

Where the print and ribbon colours are very similar the text will not be legible.  Forexample, blue print onto Royal Blue ribbon will not show up.

Black only works on pale coloured ribbon.

If you are unsure about a combination, just drop us an email or give us a call and we will advise.

Foil Printed Wedding Stationery – an introduction

Hot foil printing is a special method of printing which stamps a design in foil onto card, leather, plastic and other surfaces.

Monique monogrammed wedding invitationIt is particularly suited to wedding stationery as it is able to print metallic text and images.

Celebration Print’s range of personalised wedding stationery uses hot foil printing to print your personal details onto your invitations and other cards. The text is to create a metal plate which is then heated and stamped onto card using a hot foil machine by our workshop coordinator, Emma,  and her team.

They then assemble the foiled cards with your printed inserts and finish with ribbon and/or other embellishments.

Promoting your business with printed ribbon

Having your business name and/or logo printed onto ribbon is a great way to add a little extra to your packaging or branding without spending a fortune.

With Christmas such an important part of the year for anyone who relies on the gift market, now is the time to think about how you will present your products in-store and at fairs and events.

Using satin ribbon will give an instant “lift” to your products, creating the wow factor, increasing the perceived value and enabling you to increase your sales and profit. And by adding your own branding to the ribbon, you will ensure that both the purchaser and recipient will notice your name.

Ribbon works particularly well with those awkward shaped gift sets – some cellophane and branded ribbon and it’s done. Perfect for toiletries and cosmetics, food gifts & hampers and homewares.

Or try branded ribbon around a plain gift box for a chic, sophisticated look – great for chocolates and jewellery.

Choosing clipart for personalised ribbons

Adding a graphic or clipart to your personalised printed ribbons adds the finishing touch, but we often get asked about which graphics are suitable for which ribbons. So here is our guide to choosing the right image.

Narrow ribbon

For 10mm or 15mm ribbon, very simple images are best as any detail is lost when printed. Choose something like a small solid heart, smiley or star.

Wide Ribbon

On wider 23mm ribbon you have more choice – simple graphics will still work well but more complex images are also good – like a football, christmas cracker or wedding bells.

Banners

For banners the very simple images do not always scale up very well. For example a solid heart doesn’t reproduce well on a banner, but our open heart graphic looks great.

Open heart printed ribbon clipart

The more intricate clipart like champagne glasses and the age graphic also work really well.

If you have your own logo or graphic you would like us to reproduce, it’s usually no problem. We will need a reasonably high quality jpeg file – 300dpi is ideal. If you are unsure about the suitability of the graphic for your choice of ribbon we will be happy to advise – just call us or drop us an email.
